Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

I feel like on this site, I can go through 20 different charts and the top oh I don't know...40 albums are all the same. While they are solid albums, I crave charts that have some personality to them, charts where every now and then there is an album that catches my attention, throws me off, and introduces me to something new!!

lol, no. I simply have multiple facets to my personality. Right now I'm indulging my quest for greatness side. This in no way reflects my favorites. I keep seeing the same albums when i tinker with the overall and I figure I see them for a reason. I'm just taking some time to get acquainted with the "greatest" or at least those that are considered the greatest.

interesting concept i would reccomend you to check (although you may have already heard them) howard shore's score in cronenberg's naked lunch, neil young's minimalism in jarmusch's dead man and mychael danna's work in two particular films: ang lee's the ice storm and atom egoyan's the sweet hereafter
