"As great as this album is, it would have been even greater if they had included "Paperback Writer" and "Rain" (and taken off "Dr. Robert" and "Got to get you into my life")...which were released as "single" only in May, 1966...terrible decision. With its 90/100 rating (which is too low honestly), this should be in the top 10 but unfortunately the only band that will get an exemption to the "1 album per band" rule for most ppl is The Beatles. (OKC and Kid A are just so different from each other that no one thinks twice when they see both of them on a chart, it's expected). Also, OKC and Kid A don't compete with each other in decade charts b/c they were released in different decades whereas WYWH has to directly compete with DSOTM (not to mention many, many other 70's classics) on "best of the 70's" charts. This is why WYWH and Animals will always be underrated. However, The Wall is slightly overrated b/c of overexposure - there's even a movie! And very nearly as fun too. Its only real hiccup is its short-lived middle section. The sound established within the first few moments of '15 Step' is so distinguishable, and the superbly strong 3 songs that follow it only build it further and further. 'Nude' is one of the best songs ever, end of discussion. 'Weird Fishes' adds tumultuous and bounding flavour and a fresh boost of energy with its fast-paced-ness. 'All I Need' and 'Faust Arp' sadly don't quite make the cut for me - not sure why exactly, they just lack the essence of this album. But then along comes 'Reckoner' to kick start it all over again and begin the final act, climaxing in 'Jigsaw Falling Into Place' (where Yorke manages to use the word "beat" on a non-dance song to surprising effect), and the whole thing is so tastefully completed by the melancholy piano chords of 'Videotape'. This is an album to love and cherish. It's so genuine and wonderful. It's Radiohead being Radiohead. Nothing else sounds like this because it's in its own genre of style. Sure, maybe you could attribute a few influences, but you'd be hard pressed to find anything that isn't original. And perhaps its strongest point is that unlike previous Radiohead, In Rainbows is steered away from being political, from being a concept album or from being like Radiohead's older work. It still sounds new even as it nears its 10th anniversary. This is a rare jewel, no doubt. An album that is just music (however pretentious that sounds). I get the impression that this was made not for the sake of spreading a message or trying to top the charts. No, it was just made out of brainstorming ideas for different songs, made from bog-standard, no frills, on-the-spot creativity. And that theme spreads on to how you listen to it. It's undemanding, easy on the ear and rewarding. I'd always recommend you listen to the whole thing in one go, but aside from that there are no obligations on how to respond to it or what to feel. You the listener just get to appreciate its fantastic and unending quality. This here is a masterclass in how to make music. Take notes, and make the most of it; things like this don't come around often. "  [+]  Reply

If we get serious about this, we might consider the greatest album in terms of how influential and groundbreaking it was for its time. We consider albums that revolutionized a genre and paved the way for other great artists. These make up what can be called as an elite of 30 or so albums that are permanent contenders for the best of all time. I think both OK Computer and Sgt. Pepper's are part of this elite. Even if I give the latter an 8/10 because of personal taste, Sgt. Pepper's influence and innovation on music is an undeniable fact. Any musically cultured person could pick a favorite out of this elite, call it the greatest of all time, and give valid arguments for it, but the truth is that not all other musically cultured people will agree unanimously, ever. You can't define the greatest on sites like BEA either. As much as I love this site and everything I've discovered thanks to it, it's a relatively small community and it has its preferences too, with a handful of overrated records. Still don't really get Motion Picture Soundtrack though, it's a weird ending... 10th listen: FUCK... And that's the story of how I decided I wanted to become a professional musician when I was 17 :) Stunning album.
