The Beatles taking a darker approach. The album is often regarded as one of the weaker moments in The Beatles' career, but I think it's one of the stronger. It starts with the greatest album-opener on any Beatles album, "No Reply", and contains some of the greatest covers, particularly "Words of Love" and "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby".

Favourite tracks: "No Reply", "I'll Follow the Sun" & "Eight Days a Week"

A Hard Day's Night
Soundtrack
Must have been more than one hard day's night for The Beatles to come up with nothing less than 13 original compositions, the first Beatles album to consist solely of songs written by themselves. They're progressing notably, but still capturing the innocent sound of things to come while spreading the poetic message of love as something unbuyable. An album you can listen to any time at all!

The Beach Boys slowly starting to get amazing and much more consistent than "Shut Down Volume 2", even though it contains another terrible studio recordings outtake (possibly the best of those three, but still terrible). "I Get Around" is actually quite proggy and "Hushabye" is a fantastic cover with a mesmerizing bass. Yup, an album you need to hear all summer long!

Summer and surfing replaced with winter and Christmas. The Beach Boys weren't exactly on their home ground with Christmas music like this, but the joyful spirit from their own music managed to survive. First five songs are Beach Boys originals, quite strong and delightfully catchy. The rest of the bunch is more traditional, but beautifully performed and orchestrated, often with the comfortingly well-known Beach Boys harmonies. The Beach Boys can do Christmas music too and quite exceptionally!

Music in The Hollies style. Still relatively pure rock 'n' roll, but not too pure. A slightly higher number of slower, nostalgic delights.

Exciting new sounds in the folk tradition by Simon & Garfunkel. More like any subsequent S&G album it feels like an album made by two folk musicians coming directly in from the street, which probably isn't completely off! Nice mostly acoustic blend of originals and cover versions.

Don't love The Kinks, but this is probably my favourite of theirs. Their later more obvious albums feel too lighthearted to me while the debut here is basically everything I loved about "Please Please Me". Energetic, fun and catchy!

Fun, fun, fun with The Beach Boys once again. It's unusually full of filler such as the first in a row of three terrible studio recording outtakes, and a silly drum solo by Dennis Wilson, but The Beach Boys keep an eye on summer and deliver quite a few strong tracks as well.

Stay with The Hollies a few albums more if you want the unique sound of The Hollies. This band here doesn't sound much different than The Beatles did at the same time, except with a lot more covers. Only original composition, "Little Lover", is actually pretty cool and the covers are mainly quite good, such as the slightly creepy-sounding "Whatcha Gonna Do 'bout It?".

Out to lunch together with Eric Dolphy. Despite the sound of vibraphone reminiscent of elevator music, it is not easy-listening jazz at all! A tad too experimental for me, though the aforementioned vibraphone makes it up for a lot!
