Across the Universe of The Beatles by Mother Nature's Son

2. "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"
3. "Across the Universe"
4. "Nowhere Man"

Abbey Road, the grand finale of The Beatles. This is not a wicked plot twist or anything, this is more a fitting conclusion to one of the best stories ever told. You know The Beatles: they never settle for one mood. There are delightful, dark, mysterious, whimsical, beautiful and sad moments throughtout. However, by the time the final, famous lyric of "The End" appears, knowing these words are the last ever heard from The Beatles (more or less), don't you get just a little teary-eyed?

The Beatles weren't themselves. They were Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and they played the best imaginary concert ever! A magical show that is as nostalgic as it is timeless.

The Beatles' "flawed" masterpiece. It wouldn't be the same without "Honey Pie", "Wild Honey Pie" and "Revolution 9". I've always loved how the strings in "Good Night" unnoticeably introduce the listener to one last piece of real musical quality after the confusing avant-garde torment of "Revolution 9".

So much nostalgia in "And Your Bird Can Sing" and so much future in "Tomorrow Never Knows". So much joy in "Good Day Sunshine" and so much sadness in "Eleanor Rigby". The Beatles really delivered a wide range of genres and moods with their revolving masterpiece. Though tomorrow never knows, I'm quite certain that it's a timeless classic that will stay forever with us.

I owe Bob Dylan and The Byrds a huuuge thank you for influencing the sound on "Rubber Soul". Obviously, the songwriting is great, but it's the atmosphere inspired by the folk-rock movement that makes this album magical. "Nowhere Man" has one of the simplest guitar solos, but only shows how overrated technical ability is when it comes to music. The first Beatles album where I pretty much love every song.

The tensions between the members really come across here. It's a disoriented album where the live performances don't really belong together with Phil Spector's overproduction on certain tracks. However, I love the sporadic feel of the album and it still contains enough gems to top most albums made today.

The magical mystery tour is dying to take you away. Don't miss it, it will be The Beatles' last psychedelic tour. And it will take you to see "I Am the Walrus" & "Strawberry Fields Forever". Seriously, don't miss the tour!

Why "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out" weren't included on "Rubber Soul", why "Paperback Writer" and "Rain" didn't end up on "Revolver", why "The White Album" couldn't spare a little space for songs like "Lady Madonna", "Hey Jude" and the proper version of "Revolution"... the list of great songs The Beatles for whatever only released as singles goes on and on!

The Beatles taking a darker approach. The album is often regarded as one of the weaker moments in The Beatles' career, but I think it's one of the stronger. It starts with the greatest album-opener on any Beatles album, "No Reply", and contains some of the greatest covers, particularly "Words of Love" and "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby".

Suddenly The Beatles are not half the rock band they used to be. What's happening? They're softening up! John confesses he needs help and Paul longs for yesterday. The tempo has lowered and Ringo is providing other things than danceable beats only. As one song suggests, it's time for The Beatles to hide their love away and go in new directions lyrically (as well as musically). One could argue that it's a minor "Rubber Soul" with songs nearly as strong and a sound very much influenced by the folk rock movement, only The Beatles weren't confident enough (or ready) to release a full album of original compositions and skip the old commercial trick with a blasting rocker at the end (though admittedly John does give it full throttle with his vocal performance).

Thanks for the feedback. I can see why "Yellow Submarine" shouldn't be above "Please Pleas Me" and "With The Beatles", but songs like "Only a Northern Song", "All Together Now" and "It's All Too Much" just take me back so much that I can't help but prefer the album even as whole to their first two albums!

Great list and nice comments but Yellow Submarine really shouldn't be above any original Beatles album.
