Surfin' The Beach Boys
by
Mother Nature's Son
I find The Beach Boys to be one of the most fascinating bands ever, at least the story behind them. The light-hearted spirit of their sunshine hits and later on their adult-oriented music clashing with Brian Wilson's mental illness and the members' various drug abuses.
Add to this that I love their music, not only for their early hits, "Pet Sounds", the "Smile" album and their trademark vocal harmonies, but for pretty much anything they've done. They're truly a band that make me SMiLE!

Fills me with joy like no other album. Very uplifting and synth-heavy, extremely unpretentious, but underneath is hidden an earnestness and a glimpse of the troubled Brian Wilson's honest personality. I love you too, The Beach Boys!

How can you not love Paul McCartney's favourite album (or at least one of them) and a strong influence on both "Revolver" and especially "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"? Deeper than the usual themes about surfing and cars, greater songs and most importantly, a timelessly beautiful and revolutionary sound. Still puzzling why Brian Wilson had a nervous breakdown after having made such a great album. So what if The Beatles made a slightly better album, is that like the end of the world? Ah, well!

Wow! Where did this come from? Dennis Wilson, the drummer kept relatively in the background, suddenly came up with the greatest Beach Boys solo album. Highly orchestrated and walls of sound backed with strongly emotional power, it's an album to blow your mind. "Thoughts of You" is one of the most haunting beautiful experiences I've ever had. So sad to think about his tragic death and the follow-up that he never finished.

The Beach Boys took a trip to... yes, have you guessed it?..
That's correct! They took a trip to Holland! Can't say if it also sounds like it was made in Holland, but I do know that the trip to the foreign country resulted in an adventurous album, especially when held up against the previous "Carl and the Passions – "So Tough"". With "Holland" you get an mini album within the album, the California Saga trilogy. You also get a hit song, "Sail On, Sailor", a lightly psychedelic track, "Steamboat", two soulful ballads, "Leaving This Town" and "Only with You" and a song called "Funky Pretty" which is pretty funky, but the true mind-blower is "The Trader". If you get the CD, you'll also get a quite obscure EP with spoken word narration and some odd background music. Another unsung masterpiece by The Beach Boys.

1967 was a colourful year and could've been that for The Beach Boys too. After the scraped and odd disappointment of "Smiley Smile", The Beach Boys could've welcomed their fans with a new lush and masterfully produced psychedelic wonder, but instead they broke down even further what "Pet Sounds" had build up to. "Wild Honey" is a collection of raw and soulful songs with stripped-down instrumentation, very fun, energetic and unpretentious. Like a lo-fi album caught in the ultimate year of sonic expansiveness.

Not something revolutionary, just The Beach Boys adding some summery, fresh, crispy, delicate, delightful music to your day. The small details are what makes this album!

If you need to lighten up a little, this is the album you need to hear. Here, you get everything from the many beautiful ballads to some ligtly rocky moments to the 11 minutes long extended disco version (!) of "Here Comes the Night", originally from the 1967 album "Wild Honey". I'd especially like to pinpoint the rather unknown "Baby Blue" which sounds like dropping down slowly from heaven.

Still not quite there yet, but it's getting very close. The lyrical side of the album still revolves around the old youthful themes, but the production and orchestration are nearly as pompous and impressive as "Pet Sounds". Only one album left with minor experimentations before Brian Wilson really pulled himself together!

Summery and delightful through and through. The Beach Boys album most in line with the hippie movement and more than any other Beach Boys album full of good vibrations.

Easily the "Pet Sounds" of the '80s! Brian Wilson really lets it shine with lush production, great compositions and in my opinion a Christmassy feel. Greatest actual Brian Wilson solo album right here!

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I have yet to indulge myself in the transcendental experience that is Mike Love's "Looking Back with Love". Save the best for last, right?

Interesting chart. You obviously know your Beach boys. I'm a fan too, but not to the extent you are and your comments on each album are excellent. I don't agree with all of it but everyone has their own opinions. By the way, where's Mike Love's classic, Looking back with love? (Yes, I'm joking). Keep the summer alive!
