Surfin' The Beach Boys
by
Mother Nature's Son
I find The Beach Boys to be one of the most fascinating bands ever, at least the story behind them. The light-hearted spirit of their sunshine hits and later on their adult-oriented music clashing with Brian Wilson's mental illness and the members' various drug abuses.
Add to this that I love their music, not only for their early hits, "Pet Sounds", the "Smile" album and their trademark vocal harmonies, but for pretty much anything they've done. They're truly a band that make me SMiLE!

Easily the "Pet Sounds" of the '80s! Brian Wilson really lets it shine with lush production, great compositions and in my opinion a Christmassy feel. Greatest actual Brian Wilson solo album right here!

It was just a matter of time before The Beach Boys released their self-titled album. It's getting late in their career, something you'll notice when you hear the shockingly slick 80s production. Only recommendable if you're a big fan of either The Beach Boys or overproduced 80s pop. Fortunately, I'm both!
Favourite tracks: "Getcha Back" & "Where I Belong" [First added to this chart: 12/13/2013]

The Beach Boys are still keepin' the summer alive, even in the 80s! If you thought the last couple of Beach Boys albums were too adult-oriented, then it's a big AVOID this time around. If not, you'll get a delightful guilty pleasure with catchy if somewhat cheesy songs with at least two entirely successful tracks.
Favourite tracks: "Goin' On" & "Endless Harmony" [First added to this chart: 12/13/2013]

Still cruisin' with The Beach Boys after all of these years. They already made it big in the 60s, but here they're doing it again, mostly because of the smash hit "Kokomo". Big choruses and delightfully infectious, the songs, despite drenched in 80s sound, are actually quite great. However, the album is disjointedly composed of various songs included in recent films. An oddity like "Wipe Out" with guest rapping by The Fat Boys and backing vocals by The Beach Boys themselves strongly contrasts the pointless inclusion of classic songs from the 1960s. The Beach Boys certainly get around on the album, but for the songs alone there's great reason to listen to it!
Favourite tracks: "Still Cruisin'" & "Island Girl" [First added to this chart: 12/21/2013]

Interesting chart. You obviously know your Beach boys. I'm a fan too, but not to the extent you are and your comments on each album are excellent. I don't agree with all of it but everyone has their own opinions. By the way, where's Mike Love's classic, Looking back with love? (Yes, I'm joking). Keep the summer alive!
