The Great Pretenders

Mini Mansions

At first glance, you might not think that this album features as many famous people as it does. Mini Mansions is the project of Queens Of The Stone Age bassist Michael Shuman, who plays guitar and sings for them. He's taken a different approach than QOTSA's music, going for less of a stoner rock sound and more of a psych-rock sound, and man do these guys do it well. The thick fuzzy guitar, the reverbed, spacey vocals, it's all there and they execute it almost perfectly. The album also features Brian Wilson (yes, that Brian Wilson) on vocals for the song "Any Emotions" and Alex Turner (of the Arctic Monkeys) on vocals for "Vertigo". The addition of Wilson and Turner fit really well, especially Wilson, whose harmonies really add an extra layer to the song. Overall, this is definitely one of the better psych-rock releases this year.

Really enjoyed checking out this year chart - the effort you put in to writing up such thoughtful comments puts this chart in a realm of its own. As an observation, I think it is too US-centric. Nice to see 3 Aussie albums make the cut.
