I'm not completely convinced that Kevin Parker lives on the same temporal plane as the rest of us. The man is exceptionally talented with a penchant for writing some of the best psych-rock that's come out in the past 10 years. Tame Impala is one of those bands that has a distinct "sound" but doesn't have a formula to every album. Each album is a new exploration that Parker wanders into, oftentimes these explorations are very lonely (the guy is not a happy person), but they're so interesting you can't help but get entirely enveloped in them. With this album, Parker moves a little more away from the thick, reverbed guitars that he has so heavily relied on in the past, and shows that he's more than just a psych rock songwriter with a heavy guitar, he's an excellent producer and composer, arranging so many different things to happen all at once that it'll make your head spin. I think what takes it over the top, for me at least, is his voice. That John Lennon-y, dreamy falsetto, when he's singing "It's calling my name and it's calling yours tooooooo" it's like he's opening a door and leading you into a dreamworld that probably looks like whatever The Beatles were seeing while writing Sgt Peppers or Magical Mystery Tour. This is just another incredible piece of work from a band that has become one of the most consistent groups in music today.

Highlights include: "Yes I'm Changing", "Eventually", and "The Less I Know The Better"

It's easy to think of Pond as a poor-man's Tame Impala because of the fact that they share so many different things (genres, band members, location). But Pond isn't some copy of Tame Impala, but rather, the band where the guys from Tame Impala let loose and get a little nuts. Tame Impala is very much ruled by Kevin Parker, for better or worse, but Pond is where the rest of the guys are free to do what they want, to play around and experiment a bit, and from that comes some pretty great stuff, including this album, a fantastic bit of psych-pop with a tinge of space rock. Reminiscent of early Flaming Lips, Pond pump out an album that's both interesting from an experimental stand point, and fun from a rock standpoint. Pond continues to impress and prove themselves to be one of the more consistent psych rock bands out there. [First added to this chart: 02/15/2015]

Courtney Barnett very obviously comes from a 90s influence, but it's just an influence, she's got her own sound and she does it exceptionally well. This is Barnett's debut, and without a doubt, this is a strong debut and hopefully will be a breakthrough album for her. This album shows off Barnett's excellent songwriting ability, her dry delivery, her humor, her emotion, all on display here, and none of it is too much, it's all proportioned well. She's not trying to hard to be funny or to be emotional, she is who she is and she's proud of that. Whether she's writing a story or talking about herself, her lyrical ability is very strong, perhaps most prevalent on songs like "Depreston", in which a couple who are house hunting realize the sad history behind one of the houses they're looking at, or "An Illustration Of Loneliness (Sleepless In New York)" in which she is constantly thinking of someone, to the point that it's intertwined with her random thoughts. There's also "Small Poppies" in which her poignant line "At the end of the day, it's a pain that I keep seeing your name" excellently describes the obnoxiousness that having feelings for someone can bring. All in all, this is a well-crafted album, both instrumentally and lyrically and is an excellent debut from Barnett.

Highlights include: "Depreston", "Kim's Caravan" and "An Illustration Of Loneliness (Sleepless In New York)".

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 91.8/100, a mean average of 92.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 93.4/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.1.

Really enjoyed checking out this year chart - the effort you put in to writing up such thoughtful comments puts this chart in a realm of its own. As an observation, I think it is too US-centric. Nice to see 3 Aussie albums make the cut.
