To me this is THE rap album. It doesn't feature one weak point. Chuck D coming throught with thought provoking lyrics delivered with furious anger. Flavor Flav is the best hypeman of all-time, he's a perfect match for the more serious Chuck D backing him up with a more comical style. The scratches from Terminator X are always on point. The production from the Bomb Squad is absolutely retarded, the collage of samples still remains impressive after all those years. There's always something to listen to in the beat, the production keeps you entertained for the entire album. Also Chuck D drops a career defining performance here. This album is amongst the most sampled of all time, almost every song has been sampled to death. Even more recently artists are still paying hommage to this work with The Game rapping over the Black Steel instrumental, Jay-Z using the Show Em Whatha Got beat & hook, The Roots flipping a Don't Believe the Hype line "False Media we don't need it do we" for the hoo [First added to this chart: 10/24/2010]

Rakim, The God MC. Hip Hop wasn't ready for this. This is the album that set the mark for great mc'ing. Rakim on this album offers the best performance a rapper has ever done up to that point. No other MC had been capable of dropping lyrics of this quality for a whole album. The way he flows from one word to the next it's just so incredible and all the lines are dope as hell. I give this album the title of best lyrical performance of the 80's. Simply put every song that has lyrics has been quoted & scratched up numerous times. The production is really great with some minimalistic but effective beats. Marley Marl produced 2 tracks "My Melody" & "Eric B. Is President" which are 2 of the greatest hip hop songs ever. The rest of the album is credited to Eric B & Rakim, but apparently it's Rakim that did all the work. It's also said that many of the scratches where actually done by Marley Marl. I guess Eric B was the one paying the bills... but even tho Eric B is a fake this remains an undeniable classic. Along wi

"Without yelling over a drum roll, that style is old". Yep he called it, the end of the Run-D.M.C./Fat Boys/Beastie Boys era. It was time for new productions styles and new ways of rhyming. The ultra simplistic production from Scott La Rock & Ced Gee works perfectly fine for KRS-One. He offers a classic performance here with street stories, diss tracks & straigth braggin. He wasn't kickin as much knowledge as he would later in his career, this is the more "violent" album. Altho now Criminal Minded seems pretty innofensive with all the gangster rap we've been exposed to, back when it was released it was a new thing along with Schoolly D & Ice-T, they offered a more street influenced rap than Run-D.M.C. & LL Cool J. Not only that, KRS-One was also an extremely talented MC, dropping many fresh lines. The lyrics simply make this album, it wouldn't be a classic without KRS-One. Criminal Minded is another essential hip hop album to have, it goes right next to Paid In Full. These 2 albums showed what an mc could rea

"You're about to witness the strength of Street Knowledge"
Classic opening words for one of the most influential albums ever. When it was released this was by the far the most violent, hardcore & vulgar rap album to ever hit the shelves. They are talking about killing cops, killing any niggas that fuck with them, fuckin bitches... These guys are some bad motherfuckers! The crew is outstanding, Dr. Dre was already a big figure in the west coast hip hop scene with his work with World Class Wreckin' Cru but this is the album that put him on top. The production is simply outstanding, some funky fresh beats. Ice Cube is the star on here, each of his verses are on point making you want more. MC Ren is straight raw, he's probably the hardest. Eazy-E is the shit, definitely the one with the most attitude. They all became legends. This is a one-time all star crew that changed rap for better or for worse. It influenced thousands of rappers and still many to this day. There are no other albums comparable to this one. T

Slick Rick, THE storyteller. He first got his start in 1985 by appearing on the classic Doug E. Fresh single The Show / La-Di-Da-Di, but by 1988 he was ready for his own solo album. Slick Rick has the incredible ability to tell stories so clearly and with total freshness. He's one of hip hop's greatest character even tho his "prime" was awfully short. So many cuts on this album have become hip hop staples. "Children's Story" is the best known cut, an incredible story about a kid becoming an outlaw. "Indian Girl" is a personal favorite of mine, Slick kicks a story about a dude going up in a girl and finding crabs with spears and indian drums!. "Treat Her like a Prostitute" is words of wisdom on how to treat the girls that play tricks behind your back. "The Moment I Feared" is 3 situations where Rick would rather not be. "The Ruler's Back" is a straight braggin & boastin track, Jay straight covered the song for his album the Blueprint. The other songs are equally classic, this album is simply a hip hop masterpi

Sophmore Slump? Yes in sales, No in creativity
The production on this album simply mindblowing. The best produced album of the 80's. The Dust Brothers are gods for this, they cooked up an absolute masterpiece. The collage of samples is so good. There's a new sample every 5 second, it's just too damn entertaining and there is so much details. I bought this album 9 years ago and I'm still discovering stuff. They sample everything from The Beatles, James Brown, Johnny Cash, Curtis Mayfield, Ramones, Sly & the Family Stone, etc... Everyone gets payed hommage. Well they didn't actually get payed cause back then they didn't have to clear the samples. There will never be another album like this with as much artistic freedom because now with the sampling laws it cost too much to sample as many artists. The Beastie Boys are not really great mc's but they are cool and very entertaining. They always kick random funny lines while keeping up with the madness that Dust Brothers is droppin'. This album shows how far you

You think that changing the game once was enough for KRS? Just one year after Criminal Minded and the murder of Scott La Rock he dropped another equally influential album. KRS became the "teacha" and started kicking knowledge. This along It Takes a Nation was the birth of the political rap albums. While KRS added alot of content to his rhymes he didn't lose any freshness. This album is one of his best performances, every rhyme is on point. The beats are very simple and raw all produced by KRS himself. He did a great job on everything, it remains all that good after almost 20 years. He managed to make 2 classic records only 1 year apart, there's not alot of mc's who can claim that.

Back in the late 80's, the Ultramagnetic MC's where one of the best crews. With the sharp rhymes from Kool Keith & the highly original production from Ced Gee they dropped a classic album. Keith is just nasty, his style is very raw and up in your face. He had the balls to diss Rakim "Fish, it ain't my favorite dish!" he offers a great performance overall. I'm not the biggest fan of Ced Gee's rapping, I think he's just average but he gets a pass since he makes such incredible beats. Out of all the Kool Keith projects, his debut remains the best one of them all because it remains so fresh, innovative & consistant after all these years.

De La Soul's 3 Feet High & Rising is one of the most influential albums of all time. Not only did it introduce the skit to the hip hop album but also the production was very advanced for the year it was released in. All the skits are just stupid & pointless but they fit so well in the album. The way the album flows is just perfect, it's a very cohesive album. Prince Paul who was the DJ in the first hip hop band Stetsasonic, produced the entire album. He crafted a masterpiece of classic beats and he would go on to become one of the greatest producers of all time, but it's with this album that he really got noticed. The lyrics from Plug 1, 2 & 3 are cool, they seem to be some regular dudes. Some of the lyrics have hidden references, but they got better with that on their later albums. Overall this album is outstanding from beginning to end, it's an essential piece to any hip hop collection.
