Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

Realy good list & so nice to see On The Beach in there. Not an NY album that a lot of people pick but one of my favs. Good to see the Hold Steady as well.

Wow, I really like seeing The Soft Bulletin, Vampire Weekend Self Titled and Funeral in your Top 20. Nice work. Murmur is a junkie album I thought, but I might have to take another listen to it. Also, seeing Give Up and Sound of Silver on your chart was awesome.

Branch out a little more and get some different genres (folk rock, blues, soul, etc.) and eras (50s-60s) and it'll be an excellent list. As it is, it's very good.
