Heartbreak is obviously a tough thing to bear, but it certainly produces good music. This is his best album in years and it absolutely aches.

As has been well-documented, the band was hit on multiple fronts with family illness and death and that clearly produced a fertile creative period. It's dark and heavy while also being proggy. What more could you want from a Mastodon album? I think this is their best work since Crack the Skye.

As is usually the case with double albums (or, as here, albums released close together), I would have preferred to see the best songs from each disc put on a single release. I know Stapleton's been writing forever and has a huge catalog to pull from. But given how good the best songs on these two albums are, a single collection would have been insane. As a standalone collection, I think this is the stronger of the two and "Either Way" is the song of the year.

Brother Ali is my go-to example for a rapper who actually has something to say and he never disappoints on that count. Compared to his previous release, there's a greater number of tracks that feel personal and, dare I say, positive. I mean, it's still Ali; he's not pulling any punches on social commentary. But there's a warmth and optimism to this collection that I enjoy.

What hooked me on this album was the guitars. It's obvious that Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour are big influences on these guys. But the songs don't necessarily sound like Dire Straits or Pink Floyd; I hear more Fleetwood Mac and even Grateful Dead in their songwriting. The album is front-loaded with the best tracks but I really enjoy the whole thing.

This was the hidden gem of 2017 for me. This is his second album, which he somehow got Sturgill Simpson to produce. Maybe he wants to help another Kentucky boy make good. Or maybe, like me, he just loves this dude's voice.

I think this strikes a good balance between the sparse sound of his first record and the fuller sound he's been trying, to mixed response, to incorporate. Sam Beam always writes good songs, but they shine brightest when they're stripped back a bit.

Jones always delivered, to quote Jon Pareles, "genre-perfect old-school soul." This final album is no exception. It's a solid collection that holds its best cuts for the latter half.
