I got Either/Or immediately. Josh one of my friends back in Providence had this super cute sister with curves & dimples to dive for couldn't shut up about it. And she was right. she totally turned us all onto it way before he got huge. It was crazy catchy with Beatlesesque melodies. I always thought that was his debut for some reason and while I liked X/O, I thought Either/Or was his masterpiece. with X/O he turned a little too mainstream & commercial for my tastes back then and I quickly forgot about him having no clue that he had not one but two albums that preceded Either/Or. A few of my friends had the Heatmiser albums but even them we're like "It's nothing special" and as Spotify didn't exist never gave them really another shot.
Fifteen years or so late I joined BEA and Elliot Smith was definitely one of the favorites of the forum regulars back then. So I started digging through his stuff again. And I never could quite understand the outright love and hero worship for a guy who seemed to have only one five star album. I couldn't get It sounded just like either/Or to me but without those unbeatable/accessible melodies.
But, it was too many peoples favorite alb artists that I respected to [First added to this chart: 10/14/2017]
