Chris Cornell / Soundgarden
by AAL2014

Hey guys. It's been a week since the devastating news of Chris Cornell's passing and it was until just as I type this that I realized I didn't have a Soundgarden list. And that's a shame. They are one of my favorite bands of all time. A band I discovered junior year of high school and connected with immediately. Chris, Matt, Kim, and Ben were like friends who made the rest of my high school days much easier. And now Chris has passed. And here I am completely and utterly blanking on what to type next. It struck me, again, after a full week of knowing full well he's no longer here.

So this list is in tribute not just to my friend Chris (and of course the other guys) for his work in Soundgarden, but to sum up a career that.. ever so quietly became ever so brilliant and legendary. Project after project. Album after album. Vocal performance after vocal performance. What a musician.. The guy could sing anything. In his prime he was unlike almost any other in terms of simply what he could do with his voice. So versatile yet gut-wrenchingly honest and damn soulful. His voice didn't crumble later in life, however. To me it only became even more versatile and true to the artist he was constantly becoming.. perhaps not unlike Bowie's revolving-door look. The great thing about Chris was from day one you could tell he was a normal guy who just happened to be all time good at singing, then guitar, then arranging and songwriting, then lyrics.

Chris died less than 48 hours before I was supposed to see Soundgarden for the first time ever. I will for the rest of my life merely have to think about what his voice would have actually sounded like to my ears in concert. And that's okay.. Perhaps that just adds to the mystique I've always associated with Soundgarden.

No one sings like you anymore.

Honestly one of the most interesting albums of the 90's and all time. One of the top 10 in my main chart as well. I'm going to compare this album with Jeff Buckley's Grace, released the same year. Both very drastic feels overall, however the two albums are incredibly eclectic and successfully change vibe from song to song while still letting the album flow. An incredible piece of music. Honestly one of my picks for greatest grunge albums ever. I feel that this album is very underrated in many ways. Of course Pearl Jam with Chris Cornell is going to be more exciting... Just kidding PJ isn't bad. But so many of the songs on this record are so musically cohesive and interesting and often times very catchy. Some of Cornell's best lyrical and vocal work is on this album. [First added to this chart: 05/05/2020]

Badmotherfucker is a powerhouse. Very few albums have a side A that holds up like BMF's does. Rusty Cage, Outshined, Slaves, Christ Pose... wow. Further into the record are more standouts like Mind Riot, Holy Water, and Room A Thousand Years Wide. One of the best albums from a year jam packed with amazing albums. An excellent debut. Always has been one of the most consistent rock albums I've owned. By far their best. It doesn't hurt that there are more hits, but this album has a more authentic and somewhat bouncy feel. I prefer Chris in Soundgarden (and the Rage guys in Rage) but this album has always been a favorite. [First added to this chart: 05/05/2020]

I have so much love for this album. I feel it is one of the most underrated records on this site. When it came out I was just getting into Soundgarden's previous discography and just like Superunkown did, King Animal connected with me immediately. It was a different SG, more mature, with a different direction in writing but still melodic, heavy, and progressive.

My jaw dropped the first time I heard Rowing.

This is my favorite part of Chris Cornell's career outside of Soundgarden as a whole. So many of his songs taken to the intimate stage and turned into effortless acoustic offerings. Plenty of wonderful covers throughout the years as well. Songbook is an excellent summation of what made Chris a great solo artist. [First added to this chart: 05/05/2020]

An underdeveloped Soundgarden, but Soundgarden nonetheless. Perhaps the most directly humorous record they put out. Full On Kevin's Mom, Big Dumb Sex.. As well as a bunch of other good tunes to show that they were headed in the right direction. [First added to this chart: 05/05/2020]
