Best punk rock alternative rock grunge album of the year
Best USA album of the year
"When I was an alien
Cultures weren't opinions"
Best album ever! Too good for anything I can say about it. I am just so appreciative I was there at the time (Bleach was already a favourite), and seeing the rest of the world catch on.
Favourite song: whichever one I am listening to at the time - they are all that good to me. [First added to this chart: 07/29/2017]

Best neo-psychedelia alternative dance album of the year
Best UK album of the year
"I'm gonna live the life I love
I'm gonna love the life I live"
Such a trippy album that you don't need the drugs - this album is the drug! When it first came out I thought this was a decent album but after a few listens, halfway through Higher Than The Sun, came a moment I'll never forget when something just clicked and I totally got this album. I became totally absorbed and lost in the music. After over 25 years this album never fails to transport me to another world, where the music is everything. The vocal performance in Damaged is the best singing Bobby Gillespie has ever done and the way he sounds so sad as he sings the line "I've never felt so happy" is something special that moves me every time.
I once had the privilege of seeing them perform this album live and it was mind blowing unlike anything I've ever experienced. One of my favourite live music experiences ever.
Too many 10/10 songs to mention but my favourites are Damaged, Higher Than The Sun, and Loaded. [First added to this chart: 07/29/2017]

Best noise pop neo-psychedelia album of the year
Best debut album of the year
"You go insane I go inside"
When I first got this album in 1991 I had heard nothing like it before. A trippy album with a unique sound that looking back is distinctly a Mercury Rev sound. There is variety here, the trippy drone of Chasing A Bee, trippy punk of Syringe Mouth, trippy shoegaze of Frittering, and the epic, trippy goth of Very Sleepy Rivers, but it all flows so well, and starts and finishes with amazing songs.
10/10 songs: Chasing A Bee, Syringe Mouth, Very Sleepy River [First added to this chart: 07/29/2017]

Best punk rock grebo album of the year
"Moonshine, firewater, Captain Morgan, Johnnie Walker,
Southern Comfort, mother's ruin
Happy hours of homeless brewing
Galloways sore throat expectorant,
After-shave and disinfectant,
Parazone and Fairy Liquid
If it's in a glass you'll drink it
Anytime, anyplace, anywhere
There's a wonderful world you can share"
This album is a manic depressive alcoholic. With exhilarating highs (Surfin' USM, & Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere) and gloomy lows (A Prince In A Pauper's Grave, & The Final Comedown). An emotional rollercoaster.
10/10 songs Prince In A Pauper's Grave, Bloodsport For All, Surfin 'USM [First added to this chart: 07/29/2017]

Best hard rock alternative rock grunge album of the year
"I'm still alive"
This album blew me away in 1991. Talk about the passion! Highlighted by Vedder's vocals and lyrics but also displayed by the rhythm section and the guitar riffs and solos. Such seemingly natural talen and a love of music right across the board.
10/10 songs: Jeremy, Black, and Alive [First added to this chart: 07/29/2017]

Best heavy metal album of the year
"Forever trusting who we are
No, nothing else matters"
Yes I am one of those Metallica fans that other Metallica fans don't like because I think this "commercial sell out" album is their best. They may have slowed things down, but they lost none of their power in doing so, and contains some of their best song writing in my opinion. The album does tail off at the end and finishes with a bit of a whimper compared to the rest of the album but the highs are so high.
10/10 songs (no surprises here): Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters [First added to this chart: 02/01/2020]

Apparently there's an enormous gap in my 1991 experience called Yerself Is Steam. I'll have to check it. Thanks!
