Pixies are one of the few bands where I sit and wonder how they came up with this brilliant noise which is equal parts soft loud melodic surf rock. I don’t understand reviewers who criticize Bossanova and Trompe Le Monde they are great albums in their own right. Their brief early career is hugely influential and I have been a bit hesitant due to the standard set but I will give their latest stuff a chance.

One of the most influential bands of all time. I just saw them in concert and got to experience just how talented of a vocalist Black Francis is.

One of the most influential bands of the last 30 years. produced one absolute classic and 2 / 3 other great albums (I can never quite decide about Come On Pilgrim) but it's their influence on others which marks them out for greatness.

They were a great band, had a lot of influence, and are very fun to listen to, but I definitely think they're a little overrated. especially on websites like this.

I think the Pixies are for everyone. The vocals might put some off at first, but don't give up; you're strong enough if you believe you are.

I'm not sure combining The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, the two most loved bands in the world, is THE most apt comparison, but essentially that's what you're getting, no? Like The Beatles, the Pixies can be delightfully melodic and have comparably sweet lyrics, and like the Stones they can be reckless and energetic and will shake your grandma to her very core: Get you a band that can do both. (Nirvana can claim this formula to an extent, but they're not as rowdy, not as pretty, and have the essence of a funeral instead of a party.)

Just as importantly, like these bands the Pixies are really quite accessible (unless you need some practice with the vocals...if you're already comfortable with varying punk or metal vocals then you're probably good to go). There's something to be said for a band whose music appeals right away to the senses you were born with, and with zero fooling around (only 5 songs in 4 albums break the 4-minute mark). Am I saying you need the aid of drugs to enjoy bands like L. Zeppelin and P. Floyd and etc. as much as some of their fans seem to? Yes. Yes I am.

In conclusion, if I want to go from misty-eyed over something beautiful to smiling my head off to surfing a wave of adrenaline, all within an album (within all 4 of the O.G.'s, actually), there's only one band I trust. There are artists who can hit those key emotions [my keys, of course] as acutely, but you're probably going to need three separate artists, and no one I've heard strikes them as often or has a discography as balanced between them, song by song, as the Pixies. So long live 'em.

Doolittle is a great album. The rest have some great singles, but just are lacking where Doolittle shines. Important band, but I think they are a little overrated in the sense that they have some really good material and then some really under par material.

The creators of Nirvana, but Pixies were better, and were first.
