Favorite Song: Laguna Seca

Shearwater has been on my radar since their last album. I found myself captivated by their sound, but many bands can put out one good album. I like when an artist can reinvent themselves from album to album and still hold your attention. Then you've sold me on your project. I feel like this album would benefit from a shorter runtime, but I'm officially sold on Shearwater. I appreciate how atmospheric and haunting this album got while keeping a lot of what I liked from their previous albums. In the meantime, I'm going to play Shearwater a lot.

Favorite Song: Return To Monke

Okay, I didn't think anything would beat out Yard Act for Post-Punk album of the year, but I really enjoyed the variety and lyricism on this Viagra Boys album. Every song feels so different from the last, but they all hit hard.

Favorite Song: Kepler-22b

This album checks all the boxes of what I look for in a King Gizzard album. It feels unique in their catalogue, but at the same time I'm not sure I can see myself coming back to this album as often as Butterfly 3000 or their 2019 albums. It also feels its length. I thought I was nearing the album's end, but there were so many tracks. It does feel like you get a little bit of everything they've done so far though. It's a difficult album to revisit because of its length but a fun first listen.

Favorite Song: Dream Girl Evil

I feel like every album is better than the last with Florence + The Machine. This is an incredible, theatrical album that really puts Florence's showmanship on display.

Favorite Song: Eat Men Eat

Such a great, chaotic album! I've heard the name Black Midi before now but this was my introduction. Before now, I wasn't even sure what genre they were. I'm definitely going to check out more of their albums in the near future. There's so much care given to song craft and storytelling. It really is a masterpiece.

Favorite Song: Doomscroller

I really enjoyed this album. I might rate it lower with more listens, but I got swept up in it. I don't think it's as strong as Art of Doubt, but tracks like Doomscroller feel like essential Metric songs. There's this message of pushing through the hard times, which I think I (and many others right now) need to hear.

Favorite Song: There Were Bells

I really love how haunting and atmospheric this album is. This feels like the next evolution of Eno's sound. It sort of reminds me of what I like about bands like Dead Can Dance or Pink Floyd, but with an Eno spin on it.

Favorite Song: Snow Globe

Last year I found Black Country, New Road to be (not my favorite, but) one of the most refreshing albums of the year. Their combination of jazz and either post-punk or post-rock is really unlike what anyone is doing right now. I like a lot of post-punk/post-rock, but I wish I liked jazz more. As is, I don't really have a strong preference towards this or their first album. Both are great, but neither has completely won me over yet.

The band has announced that their singer is leaving the band after this album but the band will continue on without him. I'm curious where things are headed. I'm hoping for a Pink Floyd situation where they will continue to grow even without their singer, but we can still look back fondly on the band's first two albums as their own thing.

Favorite Song: Taking Me Back

I really love how Jack White continues to expand his sound and experiment with genres throughout the years. This is a welcomed addition to his cataloge and followup to Boarding House Reach.
