Some people don't realize that this is Joni's second album, not her first — the first was "Song to a Seagull," which didn't sell many copies because seagulls don't really buy records, and even if they did they would have thought they were getting ripped off because albums are supposed to have more than one song on them. Thankfully someone at the label came along and got her to name the follow-up "Clouds" instead of the original title, "Unstructured Melodies for Grubs."

People have made a Really Big Deal out of this album because Alexander "Skip" Spence wrote most of the songs while he was committed to Bellevue for six months, because he had tried to kill Moby Grape's drummer, Don Stevenson, and their lead guitarist, Jerry Miller, with an axe. Sure, that's bad, I'm not saying it isn't, but Moby Grape was a five-piece band at the time. In 1969, everybody wanted to be a "power trio," like Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Skip just didn't understand how to go about things, that's all. Anyway, this album isn't particularly entertaining, but if I'm going to rank "Trout Mask Replica," then I pretty much have to include this one too.

The title makes no sense until you realize that literally anything can be put in a can if you're really determined to get it in there.

Ironically, if they had put out a double album called "Canned Wheat Field Soul," I probably wouldn't have ranked that at all.

Not quite as good as "Songs From a Dirigible Storage Hangar," but it turns out reverb effects were pretty expensive back in the 60s.

This is the original score of the Broadway musical "Hair," recorded using only synthesizers in 1969, when synthesizers were practically a brand-new thing - almost as new as hair itself, which I'm told was invented in 1963.
