Everyone insisted that this was the "first rock opera," and since I've never liked opera music it took me a long time to get around to listening to it. My first thought was, "This doesn't sound like opera music at all," so I felt like I'd been lied to. Eventually I came to terms with this ridiculous deception, but to this day I still maintain that "The Who Sell Out" is the better album. [First added to this chart: 04/25/2023]

My brother bought this on pre-recorded cassette shortly after it was released, so that he could play it on one of those old portable Radio Shack cassette players during a long family-vacation car trip. At the time, cassettes were a brand-new thing, practically the essence of modernity, but the tinny speaker in the cassette player nevertheless sounded awful. So, despite all the technical effort that went into recording this, I still think of it as a "lo-fi" album. Interestingly, XTC's album "Go 2" was also recorded in Abbey Road Studios... I thought I'd just sort of throw that in there. [First added to this chart: 04/25/2023]

To me, this is their best album, even though I'll admit that the first one was more impactful, influential, and innovative. To me, this one is just more interesting and intriguing, and more "in tune" with my personal aesthetic. But that's just my interpretation. It also just sounds better. There are several albums I've ranked lower on this chart that I'd probably rather listen to at any given time, and admittedly this might seem inconsistent or even hypocritical because I normally rank albums based on how much I like them rather than their reputation or level of critical esteem. But I have to accept the judgement of others regarding this album because Robyn Hitchcock likes it. [First added to this chart: 04/25/2023]

Yellow Submarine
Soundtrack
This is actually a film soundtrack, and only the first side contains actual Beatles songs, whereas the second side consists of an orchestral score by the producer, George Martin. Oddly enough, I think I've always preferred the second side, even back when I was a much more enthusiastic Beatles fan than I am now. [First added to this chart: 04/25/2023]

People often forget that this was the last Led Zeppelin album to actually feature an exploding dirigible on the front cover. [First added to this chart: 04/25/2023]

I still can't help thinking these guys would have had more mainstream success and higher sales figures if they'd called themselves "King Red" instead. [First added to this chart: 04/25/2023]

Comments:
"Barabajagal" is the Arabic word for "barbecue" (and one of the few words in any language that features the letter "A" in every other character position). But Donovan claimed he made up the word himself after hearing the Beatles track "I Am The Walrus" (whose refrain, "goo-goo-ga-joob," is similar to that of the title track, "goo-goo barabajagal"). This is the effect that barbecue can have on some people - it just sort of sits in the back of your mind, making you think "I've got to go get barbecue" until the words just sort of spill out in a completely haphazard fashion. Even though many people call this the "first punk album," I thought about ranking this a little lower because at my age, it's practically unlistenable. But seriously, how could I? It's Iggy, so it has to be in the Top Ten. [First added to this chart: 04/25/2023]
