Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)
This artist is rated in the top 1% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 85.3/100, a mean average of 84.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.0/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 14.1.

I've only really started listening to Leonard Cohen since his death. For some reason I always regarded him as a poor man's Dylan, but since buying the Live in London album I've become a fully fledged fan. One of my things I'm looking forward to in 2021 is making my way through his back catalogue.
His first album is one for the ages.

Deep voice straight from his soul

A great singer, magnificent musician and mingblowing lyricist (and inexplicably underrated)
Leonard Cohen is one of the very few lyricists whose words work outside of the music. There are many great wordsmiths from Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Morrissey, Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell, but Cohen's work on their own more than anyone else's. As for the music, his first three albums(songs of Leonard Cohen, Songs from a room, and, Songs of love and hate) are perfect, a brilliant trilogy full of great songs. His seventies records are a little more patchy, but, New skin for the old ceremony, is an underrated gem, while the Phil Spector collobaration, Death of a ladies man, is hit and miss. By the eighties, Cohen started to employ more contemporary sounds and while some of it sounds musically dated the material was as strong as ever with both, Various positions, and, I'm your man, two of his best albums. The early noughties brought the superb, Ten new songs, and the disappointing, Dear Heather. His final three releases can be seen, like his first three, as a kind of trilogy. Old ideas, Popular problems, and the recent, You want it darker, are all superb albums, three of his best. Leonard Cohen was a great singer/songwriter, a true artist, whose music and words will amaze and inspire for generations to come. R.I.P. Leonard.

If anything, at least his late-career surge may have introduced another generation to his beautiful cool. RIP, Canadian ambassador.
R.I.P. Leonard. Sleep tight.
RIP Leonard Cohen...one of the very very best, in fact a genius for me. Hallelujah is indeed wonderful but there are so many other songs to remember also - Suzanne, Famous Blue Raincoat, Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye, Sisters Of Mercy, Last Year's Man etc.
RIP Leonard Cohen. Truly one of the most beautifully poetic artists of all time. And I mean this, truly. I remember hearing his debut album just a week ago and being truly enthralled. It's so devastating to lose such a talented musician again this year.
