A list of some of the bands from the British Isles which could be categorised as 'Windmill Scene' bands, named after a small pub in Brixton, London where a lot of these groups have played to build some momentum and get some live experience. Mostly made up of post-punk/punk/post-rock bands, the scene is a hotbed for experimental rock music for a lot of young bands with significant potential.
I have lived in London for a couple of years and currently live within walking distance of the Windmill and I have therefore seen most of the bands in this list live, some of which have been amongst the best live performances I have ever seen. The standouts are: Black Midi, Fat Dog, Maruja, Butch Kassidy, Idles, Enola Gay, Ugly.
Other bands which either don't have a qualifying release for BEA or are up and coming bands with almost no or, in some cases, no released music, are listed below. The most promising of which are at the top.
Fat Dog - King of the Slugs, All the Same, Running (all Singles). Woof (Album) coming Sept 2024. One of the most unique bands around.
Butch Kassidy - Heath (Single). If only they would drop some more music, their live shows are legendary.

Ever since I'm Happy Your Here was released as a single, I was following this band very closely. Several incredible singles followed and formed this EP. Great bombastic indie rock with folk and prog rock influence, I hope this band goes far.

The hottest band around at the moment. Intense and passionate post-rock, most similar to For the First Time era Black Country, New Road. If they can get enough funds together to put an album out, I expect great things from them.

A very exciting band with a lot of potential. Their latest EP was a little disappointing but this demo and their singles are excellent. Expansive post-rock.
