40/100
After the title track which is sooooo bombastic and overproduced, She Cleans Up as an obnoxious attempt at alt-pop and indie surf, and the bite-lacking Accidental Dose, I get my first real FJM joint in Mental Health, sounding like the best B-side to Pure Comedy. That touch of flute was nice and cutting deep. However, insufficient experimentalism of coffeshop, singer-songwriter and electro-pop comes on Screamland, not worthy of your time. I admire what he was trying to do on Being You, with the avant-garde melody, mixed with generic indie pop drums, however it's engineering that makes my shiver in awkward; it's neither raw enough nor harmonious, it's vanilla. Before the record gets to Summer's Gone that sounds like a D-side to Chloë, we get just a second great song with I Guess Time just Makes Fools of Us All, another one of his philosophy pieces ("The groom is a liar / And the bride is a shill / The priest says, "If these two don't make it / Who among us ever will?" / Don't ask the love you dare for a prediction / Wherein the lovers of tomorrow are involved / I guess time just makes fools of us all" , chef's kiss), but the rhythm has an interesting blend of western and mambo (?). Tillman sounds more chilled out in his delivery, but doesn't hurt the song too much.
Yeah, the album's mediocre, props to Tillman for still trying at least.
