Loving it Live (1 - 100)
by Johnnyo
Over the last 50 or so years I've seen so many bands play live. Some wonderful, some not, so I've decided to trawl my fading memory & pick out the greatest live acts that I've seen. Might be a combination of gigs that make them great or one outstanding gig that has lived in the memory. Early days & in not good order yet. Hard to include acts that have not released an album.
This chart hasn’t been update in 10 years so going to have a real go at this one. Also going to need to do a 101 - 200 to account for the gig over the last 10 years.

It was a hot summer night in the city. Saw them about maybe 15 / 20 years ago at the Forum in Kentish Town. Middle of summer, hot & sticky day in London (yes, we do get them occasionally?). We were on the balcony. Very claustrophobic with the heat & the band played brilliantly. It was a fabulous combination that made for a night everyone who was there still talks about. Seen TFC a number of time & they are always top draw but this night was extra special.

I've seen Dream Syndicate play many times and what puts them so high on my list is that they are always, without exception, a brilliant live band. They have never "dialled it in". They give everything that they have every time.
It also helps that their material is so strong. Always looking forward to John Coltrane Stereo Blues should they choose to play it. Can't pick out one gig. It's the amalgamation of outstanding performances that I love
Just an additional footnote: The fabulous Steve Wynn appears a number of times on the chart, this being the first [First added to this chart: 04/26/2023]

Too many great gigs to pick one out. I've seen Neil play many times and he doesn't always deliver for me but every time I've seen him with Crazy Horse it's been outstanding. My favourite artist in my favourite incarnation

Both times that I've seen them was @ the Albert hall. Second gig gets my top gig vote. Stephen Stills was on fire from the 1st note & just kept up the intensity till the last songs. Brilliant. The highlight however was a fabulous version of cathedral with Graham nash on the organ above the stage. Magical.

Saw him a few months before his untimely death @ the now demolished Astoria 2 in London. That voice! Just an amazing night that I'm sure lives in the memory of everyone who was privileged enough to be there.
The fabulous Bettie Serveert were support that night [First added to this chart: 02/13/2013]

I usually like small venues but the best time that I ever saw them was on the pyramid stage @ Glastonbury. Fabulous night. Also the Hammersmith Odeon gig in the late 80's was pretty special

Only got to see them twice, Glastonbury @ the end of the 90's which was pretty special & @ the O2 a few years back. Both times they were mind blowing. Fabulous gigs both.

Greatest gig. 4th July 1985, Wembley Stadium. Opened with Independence Day (natch) and played for 3 1/2 hours. Awesome. Saw them again about 10 years later. Also a great gig

Two stand out gigs. 1st time I saw them @ The Astoria 2 was fabulous. 3rd time @ Under The Bridge (great venue by the way if you get a chance to go) was in 2012. Great night out.

It is but if you think about it's usually at least two bands per gig and maybe one gig a week. It all adds up.

Forgot about this chart. 6 years old. My god. Needs updating. It now been 45 years since my first gig and i’d guess i’ve Seen around 100 bands a years in that time. Probably 40 festivals in that time which helps to get the number up. Wow. That around 4,500 bands. Can that be right? I guess so.

Wow. You have been to a lot of gigs.
Ones I wish I could see are Bruce Springsteen, Radiohead, Steve Earle, Neil Young and Sam Brown. What a voice.
Good you saw Deacon Blue. I saw them on the Your Town tour in the 90's. Ricky Ross was pretending to be Bono, dressed in a black leather jacket and shades and he made graffiti. Bit distracting but it turned out to be a great gig.
I haven't been to too many gigs myself but the best one I went to was The Cure on the Wish tour, 1992. I was 16 and right up the front. They were brilliant.
