Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 83.0/100, a mean average of 81.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 83.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.1.

Aphex Twin breaks the boundaries of existence on this album. He creates a sphere that exists independently of this earth. Just by reading the songtitles this is indicated with titles such as Heliosphan and Hedphelym which is non-existing words, suggesting some kind of otherworldly spirit, but these titles are juxtapositioned by actual substance, such as Actium and Delphium. In comparison to his later IDM and Techno efforts this album is way softer, but it this is still his most enchanting album. the pulsy rythm of Pulsewidth, the distorted synths of Green Calx and the soundscape of Xtal and all this only created by a synthesizer and a drum machine. This album was kind of prophetic in its sound; that in the future nothing less than a simple machine is needed to make an album.
This is one of the greatest albums of all time.

For any electronic enthusiast, this album is like the template of how to captivate the listener without the explicit requirement that said listener also dance to the underlying beat. But this album doesn't lose the capacity to make you dance or move to it either. And it isn't just tuneless, experimental bleeps and bloops. It is, instead, an incredibly pleasant sonic listening experience made through basic uncluttered layerings of synth/sampling. And it hasn't lost any of its lustre in 24 years. Incredible!

It's very possible that I'm too naive to enjoy this. Having said that, this doesn't function as anything more than background music for me. I don't feel really any emotions when listening. I've given it a fair share of spins but it's just not doing it for me. I wish I knew why I didn't like it but I don't. It's possible that I find this type of computer generated too perfect, I guess, but I think that's unlikely. I can assure you that it is not a disdain for instrumental pieces. Maybe I'll get it someday. (Edited)

First electronic album I properly got into. It took me out of my one-dimensional music habits and I would highly recommend to any music fans, not just of this genre.

Classic Album. It's like an Ancient Artifact, Something Timeless and Unique. Aphex Twin's Best Work.

Best Songs: Xtal, Pulsewidth, Ageispolis, Ptolemy, We Are the Music Makers, Actium.
