It is a very rewarding album and if you give it the time it deserves the music will demonstrate that to you but it does take some patience to be able to see that. The drums are fantastic and provide a backbone to each track that really maintains the tempo and it guides you through the album. It creates a fantastic atmosphere as well with it sounding quite dark and mysterious and then when the guitars and vocal build on top it creates a beautiful style of music that is very unique and quite similar to shoegaze. The lyrics are great as well and allow us to make our own perceptions of what he is trying to say making it a very relatable listen. However, a couple songs do feel less fleshed out than others and some of the performances in places could be better. Sometimes the vocal does falter a little but the majority of the time it is very enjoyable. Overall, an album that deserves more praise than it has as it has a lot of hidden gems on here and it really does create a fantastic vibe for the listener. "  [+]  Reply

Many fans including me were shocked with the straightforward pop/rock, emphasis on pop, of Minutes To Midnight. That whole album scaled down the intensity and punch of previous Linkin Park. A Thousand Suns is generally more mellow too but it is way more creative of an outing with melody and harmony. I can't give it a 100 because there is too much filler at an attempt for atmosphere and concept. 15 "tracks" shaved down to 10 and this is more fluid album. All the actual songs are very good. Wretches and Kings is probably the only average Linkin Park song here. With the closing Messenger and its super simple guitar, Linkin Park highlights the lead singer's vocal range and emotion, trading in youthful punchy bravado for some vulnerability which is a nice change of pace. This is the black sheep of the LP catalogue but its my favorite."  [+]  Reply

A limitation is many of the songs feel underwritten. It’s not what is written is not well put together but more verses would flesh out the topics better. Instrumentally, Peter Gabriel like synths coat the album. The synths are antiquated in the best way possible. Their slight awkwardness adds to the topical assailability. The unfortunate exception to this is “That's Our Lamp”. It sounds so goofy that it completely negates the conflict of the lyrics. “Laurel Hell” is not overwhelming in quality, but it has a charming heart to it. "  [+]  Reply

This is one of a few albums that had every member at top form, pushing one-another to stretch the boundaries of music, and Tony Williams was indeed the "creative spark." Miles could take any tune and make it evil, and this work starts out threatening, foreboding, and out of perfect step with the heavy tune titled Orbits. A historic tune on its very own. Then what do they lay down, but another gem in "Circles," and Herbie delivers a historic solo piece. Then "Footprints" rocks the world. If every song other than Footprints sucked, the album would still be required listening among jazz fans. They pull of voodoo magic with timing in that song, and Miles proves to the world that he could arrange like none other. Check Waynes version on Adam's Apple...he missed the boat with the direction and time changes, and Miles hit the nail on the goddamned head. As did the whole band. Dolores fits like a key in this album. But then, what do they lay down? They kill it with two of the hardest-driving tunes they could possibly produce. THE ENERGY in those tunes! You are littering in the Grand Canyon. You are filling Yosemite with a lake. YOU are blaspheming against God and Nature by not reckoning just how brilliant this album is.
