I have a bit of a strange relationship with this album, I first listened to it a year or so ago, and it was my first jazz album ever. Needless to say, I was a bit confused. Not because of the music, since that isn't really that abstract or anything, no, I was confused about why this album got so much praise as it did, Since it really didn't seem to sound that different to other jazz to me. I remember thinking that I just hadn't heard enough jazz to fully appreciate it (which is probably still the case). So, I rated the album 85/100 thinking that people probably know what their talking about when they say this album's great, and I should just believe them, even though I didn't see the same thing in this album. Okay, cut to a few months later, and I have listened to the thing three times. While it was still not grabbing me like it was grabbing other people, I did appreciate the cool & calm nature of the album. (which made it great for doing homework, but I digress) Well, soon after that, I thought I needed to listen to some more jazz, since it was by far the genre I had heard the least from (aside from maybe country). So, I started with the classics: John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, and even Miles Davis's very own In a Silent Way, and I realised that I really liked these albums, (even going as far as puuting The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady in my top 100), and while listening to these albums, I started liking Kind of Blue less and less. "How could people say this is the best jazz album, when these other ones are clearly better?" I thought to myself. I guess it's good to not have opinions like everyone else, but I would would love to see what so many of you see in this album. Maybe I need to listen to it some more times, or listen to some more jazz before and after this album came out, and I'll appriciate the influence and relavency this album has, or maybe I'm looking to deep into it, and I just don't like an album as much as other people do. The wierdest thing is, I really do expect me doing a complete 180 and loving this album in a couple of months, I mean, it happened before with albums like funeral, which is now in my top 10. I will probably post another comment if I start really liking the album, and I'll say how much of an idiot I was for not seeing the pure genius in this album, but for now, it's a fine album, but not exceptionally great in my opinion."  [+]  Reply

Just when you thought he'd already broken more new ground and created more timeless masterpieces than could ever be matched, he drops this piece of fusion genius, which is probably the most ambitious thing Davis ever released in his career. And I mean this is fucking Miles Davis we're talking about. Made really just as an attempt to reconnect with a younger audience who had strayed from jazz, Davis ended up crafting what would later be seen as an important forerunner of everything from post-punk to drum'N'Bass. He played with weird structures and repetition and all kinds of avant-whatever else he felt like screwing with because he's Miles fucking Davis. He mastered the electronic music aesthetic before electronic music was really even a thing. As "out there" as all this sounds, throw in some funk and still maintain some jazz, and what could have been a Stockhausen tribute instead becomes a funky as fuck Stockhausen tribute album. The avant-garde has never been so catchy. It’s not surprising that, upon its initial release, On the Corner was met with not only critical scorn projected by those who just really didn’t get what they were listening to, but with a massive backlash from anyone who had been a dedicated fan of Davis’ jazz for any great amount of time. To them, this album must’ve felt like a complete abandonment, a monstrosity that marked the fall of a giant. But really it was quite the opposite; Miles Davis had hit a point where his artistic ambitions required him to advance sonically, and so advance he did. Fuck anyone who didn’t like it. Oh and I’m sure the shocking offense which was the actual music of this album was only worsened by those who cared to look into those credited, because holy shit what a lineup. Prominent featurings of everyone from Chick Corea to John McLaughlin to Herbie Hancock (just to name a few), what could possibly go wrong? Well in the eyes of the 70s jazz community, everything. In actuality, not a goddamn thing. No matter how many unexpected sounds are thrown at you, not matter how unfamiliar this album is from most anything the average listener is likely to have heard, its “weirdness” is the furthest possible thing from a hindrance on what is, in the end, an album without fault. Though I can’t really make statements like that when On The Corner doesn’t exactly have any peers to which I should be comparing it to judge its relative awesomeness. The idea Miles had in mind for the music here was to emulate 'the effect of a train going at full speed (which he compared to the force of a boxer)', which is particularly evident on the first track, the magnificent 'Right Off', a series of improvisations by stellar jazz musicians like John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock and Davis himself, where Billy Cobham's drums feature a very train-like feel to them.
