Morgan & the ensemble show a whole extra layer of creativity on Sonic Boom where the compositions (5 of 6 are Morgan originals) absorb just a hint of modal influence while remaining mostly rooted in hard bop, giving the album a slightly more adventurous and, for me, even more satisfying listen. David "Fathead" Newton, usually a straight R&B guy, plays admirably on sax and adds some welcome soul to the excellent jazz, as does Cedar Walton on piano. Overall, this latter album is top shelf special to me.
