Splendor & Misery comments
Gotta love clipping. I probably set my expectations too high for their second album, but there’s still a lot to be enjoyed here. Just like their self-titled debut, Splendor & Misery demands to be listened to in one uninterrupted sitting to get the full effect. This time around there’s a more cohesive narrative, and the production is so finessed that you’re basically listening to a non-visual film.
Best track: All Black. The first full-length track on the album, it sets the scene spectacularly. ALL BLACK EVERYTHING.
Just sensational. Experimental, atmospheric, incredible lyricism, great drone-y sounds, gospel cutting through, rich concept, but concise and sharp. Really impressive listen.
A pretty amazing concept album by clipping. It's definitely not as catchy as CLPPNG or as harsh/unsettling as Midcity, but it's story and wide ranging style make for a great concept album, and since Daveed Diggs flow is so unbeatable its no wonder this album ended up so great.
