Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 66.7/100, a mean average of 65.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 66.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.7.

This is where the Goo Goo Dolls as I know and love them truly begins. Melodic, emotional and enjoyable power pop and alternative rock with memorable melodies and fine lyrics. It might not stand out among the thousands of similar records released at the time, but it has stood the test of time better than most other albums the Dolls have released. Headed by the classic hits singles Long Way Down and Name, the Goo Goo Dolls present this new, polished mainstream sound with the same conviction and strength as their earlier punk sound.

That being said, there's also plenty of filler on this album such as Flat Top or Somethin' Bad; songs that are okay but not particularly memorable. The former punk sound is almost completely gone though, and the musical style is more streamlined throughout the entire album.

Not the best album ever, but better than a lot of the stuff in this genre that's out there. The lesson I learned from this is that every 1 word Goo Goo Dolls song is better than all the multiple word ones. Bizarre, but true.

A finely tuned and polished modern rock album. Great stuff, this is what made me take an interest in them.
