I have a ticket to see Pickwick play at a dive bar here in Bozeman, Montana, next week, so I've been revisting this album which I first heard a few years ago but haven't listened to much since. It's much better than I remembered--the band is tight, and they maintain a consistently likeable retro sound through their use of reverb and steady organ chops. It's nothing you haven't heard before if you're at all familiar with developments in Americana over the past several decades, but it's done with a lot of energy and skill. Perhaps not surprisingly, the best track here is "Lady Luck," thanks to the fantastic vocals provided by guest singer Sharon Van Etten, one of the most unheralded and underrated female vocalists of her generation. At least David Lynch appreciates her--hence her outstanding contribution to the latest season of Twin Peaks.
