Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 81.1/100, a mean average of 80.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 81.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.8.

Beyond historically important; you may not want to listen to it a lot, but if you talk music around the sound system with visitors, you are going to want it sooner or later.

Groundbreaking yes. Something you want to listen to over and over. Not really.

The first time I listened to this album, the thought occurred to me: is this really just one guitar? On some of the songs, it seemed to me that there must be two guitars playing. Robert Johnson's skill was really striking. God only knows how many members of the British invasion of the 60's were influenced by this. The Rolling Stones covered "Stop Breaking Down" (and so, later, did the White Stripes) and "Love in Vain". John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton covered "Ramblin' On My Mind". Texas bluesman Johnny Winter covered "When You Got A Good Friend". "Sweet Home Chicago" and "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom" are blues classics covered by many.

Does anyone dare suggest that Robert Johnson is a little overrated? This is a good record, don't get me wrong. But does anyone listen to it all the way through? There's a certain monotony to hearing every song twice, even if it's a classic.

The complete recordings by Robert Johnson are better heard on THE CENTENNIAL COLLECTION (Columbia Legacy/Sony 2011) with much improved sound quality. Furthermore THE CENTENNIAL COLLECTION has got the alternates at the end of each disc (CD 1: SAN ANTONIO RECORDINGS; CD2: DALLAS RECORDINGS), which I prefer over listening to the alternative versions following the master takes.
