If this is poppier than fans are comfortable with, let's admit that Steven Wilson takes any form of music and makes it much better, more complex and pleasing. Those four openers are Wilson perfection. This guy just loves making great music. Permanating is a damn great Supertramp tribute, and then Blank Tapes... just wow.
Dear Steven Wilson, I don't know where posting this comment, having no Instagram/Facebook/etc...
I was at your concert in Ravensburg, Germany, the 13.02.2018.
Quite suspicious about what direction you were taking, I took the time to listen to you last Album, To the Bone, and even enjoy it.
As you ever claimed, stay open minded.
Can you explain me now, why:
-you said, TWICE, "Today, Pop Music is shit! Like Miley Cyrus or this stuff", when you said a couple of years ago "Stay open minded to every genre of Music"
-You had a running gag with a smartwatch, looking how many calories you burnt, when you said from Hand. Cannot. Erase. "This Album is about how the Technology is destroying the modern Society"
-Why Adam Holzmann told me "Sorry man I don't have time for this shit" when I told him my suspicion about the way you're turning into
-Why you did make Nick Beggs "yoga" on the stage, presenting him as a sex machine and letting me the Impression Nick Beggs became your pet/slave
-Played only 5 Songs from your new Album? It sould be a good Album after all, Hearing what you told about
-Why you talked so much compared to the Hand Cannot Erase Tour?
You made the biggest Album ever with Hand Cannot Erase, Mr Wilson, it changed me for the past 3 years.
But now, I have 2 impressions, and I don't know which one is the right:
-You're too old for continuing Music, and have reached this Point where an old band is not able to say stop
-Celebrity is hitting you too much, and you're turning into a HUGE asshole ; that could explain by the way why Marco Minneman and Guthrie Govan left.
You're a great componist, Mr. Wilson, but ALONE, you will not achieve anything. That Album is a proof of it. Not bad, but nothing compared to the rest of your discography.
To sum up, I have the Impression you lied to me all These years, and the two middle fingers I showed you during the concerts were merited (you surely didn't see it).
I won't attend your concerts anymore. Until you become the simple man you were before. (Edited)
When Steven Wilson pops his clogs (and I hope that isn't for a long time yet),he will be revered with the same degree of awe as Hendrix, Prince, Bowie, Froese, to name but a few. This album is superb! I like the slight shift to a more Bowie type approach. Pariah could become one of my all time favourite tracks from any artist, when it breaks it gives me goose bumps.

Some good tracks, but the good parts are too few between, and the bad parts too long. Sometimes feels innovative (stellar harmonica solo on Refuge), but other times feels tiresome or overdone.
