Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.6/100, a mean average of 76.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.6.

Prog revisionist Steven Wilson is well known as an audiophile who tirelessly campaigns for improved digital audio standards and promotes the use of 5:1 surround sound. On the album cover he can be seen demonstrating his latest range of audio equipment and confidently predicts "...by the year 2015 we will all listen to music this way".

Still have lots to learn about this album, mainly due to it's dense capacity (4 full sides of vinyl)... but so far so good.

This album is so haunting.. I love how Steven uses contrasts in the moods of the album especially with Get All you Deserve and Insurgentes (in my opinion these two songs cannot be seperated, they are simply perfect together)

This album has an incredible brooding atmosphere - really unlike any other work that Wilson has produced. Significant other is one of my favourite songs of all time. Harmony Korine and Insurgentes the others stand outs for me.

I admit that I don't listen to this album much. I love Harmony Korine, Twilight Coda, Veneno Para las Hadas, but there is too much distortion on this cd. I particularly like the songs that were left off this album such as Puncture Wound, Collecting Space, The 78 and Desperation.

Anyone that's at all interested in production should hear this album, as it is one of the most well-produced recordings of the last decade. A track like Significant Other has every risk of drowning itself out or falling apart, even in the most able hands. And yet every element of this album is perfectly placed in the mix. This is a challenging listen for most, but unspeakably rewarding. There are none of the Beach Boys-esqe harmonies or catchy hooks that one comes to expect from listening to Porcupine Tree, and if you want to rock out, I suggest you look elsewhere. What you will find here is a mixture of dark psychedelia, shoegaze, trip-hop, orchestral... okay and a bit of rockage. Less Floyd and more NIN, ya dig?

Steven Wilson is a musical genius. Closest thing you will find to Pink Floyd in the past twenty years (Outside of Porcupine Tree, which is his band).
