Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 9% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.8/100, a mean average of 74.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.7.

Never in the league of other Paisley Underground bands like Dream Syndicate they were still a great live band and they produced some excellent studio albums.

This was their 4th and it's a great example of the bands' work.

Lead guitarist Chuck Prophet went on to make some outstanding solo albums which are well worth checking out

Think The Replacements meet The Gun Club and you’ve got GOR and this album. Its third album lucky for these West Coast wild boys via Arizona - they would never release a better album than ‘Gas Food Lodging’ nor better track than “Hair Of The Dog”

Gas Food Lodging is a long forgotten gem of the gold stream that was 80s alternative rock. The group is heavily influenced by Neil Young and Crazy Horse with a nice punk edge and a dash of psychedelica. It's excellent from start to finish, with solid songs and pleasurable performances.

Note that the the title track, absent here, finally surfaced as a 10" with The Drifter reprising on the B Side.

If you enjoyed this record I can't say I recommend anything further from the group. Aside from their follow-up EP "No Free Lunch," you would be more satisfied listening to similar cowpunk of the era. Check out The Silos, Long Ryders, Meat Puppets, Beat Farmers, Lone Justice and Dream Syndicate.

A Side: That's What Dreams
B Side: Sixteen Ways

An album that I read so much about over the years before I finally heard it that it never quite could live up to the sound I'd imagined in my head. I'd read about it being a high point of Cowpunk which made me expect something more original than the Sticky Fingers era Stones that it sounds like to me. It's influence on bands that followed it had no doubt diluted it's impact by the time I heard it. All this isn't to say I don't like it, it's a good album with some solid songwriting. The riff running through Fading Away is a highlight, Sixteen Ways is good enough that arch Magpie Justine Frischmann ripped it off for Elastica's Waking Up and Hair of the Dog delivers on the promise that Cowpunk implies. The Drifter and Sea of Cortez sound like a band trying to split the atom (if the atom is Neil Young's Cortez the Killer) and ending up with 2 half atoms that are not quite as good as the original.
