Although responsible for many terrific original tracks herself (Batonga and Agolo spring to mind), Beninese vocal phenom Angélique Kidjo has a considerable talent for interpreting other people’s songs in her style, and this year she upped the ante by covering the entirety of Talking Heads’ classic album Remain In Light. In her hands, the album becomes more defiant and sanguine, perhaps a consequence of David Byrne’s Afrobeat influences being taken back to the source.

An interesting concept, but a lot of the tracks don’t have enough oomph behind them. I did enjoy her rendition of The Great Curve and Listening Wind though.
