A vast improvement on his previous release this is Grant back to his best. There are some strong cuts here with those brilliantly funny and often biting lyrics present but the album feels slightly overlong and maybe an eight track album rather than a ten track one would have been better. Still a contender for one of the best records of the year.

After the slight blip that was the last album which was far too messy and confusing to be coherent, Love Is Magic is a return to the quality we’re used to. This time the 70’s style FM rock has merged completely with the synth-pop to create something that is unique and synonymous with John Grant alone. Thankfully the songs about his infamous ex have disappeared to be replaced with pithy and bitchy snipes at clubland...but in a nice way.
