I put this album in my Jefferson Airplane top 4:

2 Volunteers

They all sit nicely in the psychedelic camp. Title track on this album is a personal favourite.
This album never really worked for me, except for "Lather." It happens, and I'm not like everybody I should be. So sue me.

Sonically and structurally similar to the previous albums. With more prevailing and heavier guitar&bass parts.
Not an experimental album, albeit continuing into the proven psychedelic vein. The year after the summer of love.
Jefferson Airplane belongs to the canon of psychedelic rock and to listening lists of every serious music fan.
Not bad, but not their best. I found the A side to be stronger, with Triad (a David Crosby song) to be the most interesting. The rest plays out in a fuzzy, forgettable way that sort of haunts a lot of Airplane material.

I put this one right up there with Baxter's and Pillow. It has some of Grace's best vocals and makes for an excellent listen throughout.
Grace Slick's voice is just incredible, and as usual the songs she wrote are the best. My favorite Jefferson Airplane album
I've always loved Grace's lead vocals numbers.
She shines in 'Leather', 'Triad' and 'Greasy heart' wich I think are the best songs here along with 'In time'.
A step below are 'Crown of creation' and "Ice cream phoenix'.
The rest is average but not every record can be a masterpiece so...
A very good album overall.
More like, surrealistic pillow, after the psychedelic experimentation of, Baxters, it's probably the last great Jefferson Airplane album. Some great tracks, lather, the title track and David Crosby's, triad. Airplane, epitomized that Californian sixties hippy thing that it was never going to work in the seventies. Still, they made three great records. How beautiful was Grace Slick in those days?

Lather tells a creepy, yet compelling story.
The Airplane’s third in their four-album string of some of the best music of the decade: Surrealistic Pillow-After Bathing at Baxter’s-Crown of Creation-Volunteers. You wouldn’t be wrong if you ranked the records in that order, either. Crown has as its highlights the amazing title cut, as well as “In Time,” “Ice Cream Phoenix,” “Greasy Heart,” the lovely “Triad,” and the offbeat “Lather.” A must have for sixties aficionados.
