Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. Given the time, and the fact that she kept busy with various appearances on other people's albums, I was beginning to wonder if she'd ever put out another of her own. What she's finally given us is an incredibly sparse and quiet record. Long-time partner David Rawlings really shines on this one, with every song containing a meandering guitar flourish. And Gillian is, as ever, a master lyricist.
This is probably Gillian's least good album, and a slightly disappointment after such a long wait between releases, but it's still a fantastic collection of songs, and would be a high point for almost any other songwriter.

This is supposed to be her best album since "time (the revelator)" -- too bad i don't have that other one, because this album is pretty nice in telling its its rootsy-alt-country, americana story. Between this and her accompanying vocals on this year's decemberists album, she's had quite the year.
