Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 78.1/100, a mean average of 77.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.8.

Shortlisted for album of the year at the 1994 Mercury prize. The winner was Elegant Slumming by M People. Of those shortlisted, this would have been my pick as album of the year

Not breaking any new ground, but the songs and playing are excellent. I would have preferred a more organic band sound - e.g., less mellotron, and fewer instances of Weller doing his own backing vocals on overdubs. It's a bit overproduced. Nevertheless, "Shadow of the Sun" has long been one of my favorites. "Wild Wood" definitely sounds like a Nick Drake tune. B-side "Ends of the Earth" is better than the instrumentals, should have made it onto the album.

A fine album in the good old singer-songwriter style ala CSN&Neil Young (there are even some guitar solos, my gods).

Still probably Weller's best solo record. Released just before the Brit pop explosion, which somehow elevated Weller to some sort of 'godfather of pop' status. Anyway, excellent record.

A masterpiece. Lyrically outstanding about lost love, the passing of time and summer days.

Weller's best work is a musical masterpiece. This should certainly be considered one of the greatest rock albums of all time, but sadly it is generally both unknown and vastly underrated. While it did go platinum in the UK, it is unheard of in the US. The opener, Sunflower, draws you in for sure. Along with Shadow of the Sun, Has My Fire Really Gone Out? and the title track, they make up the standout tracks. The other tracks are also memorable and pretty much just as strong. Jazzy instrumental interludes separate the tracks in a well planned out way, making the whole album sound seamless.
