Lydia Loveless released some breakthrough albums in the 2010s. Somewhere Else (2014) featured a new streamlined rock sound, with lots of hooks and glorious original heartbeat songs. Real (2016) was an equally excellent set of songs, with signs of maturity and growth.
Daughter (2020) arrived following a divorce to longtime husband and band member Ben Lamb. One can assume that some of the songs, particularly the title track were inspired by the divorce, with the lyrics being so personal that it has to be inspired to parallel events in Loveless' life.
Loveless has continued to grow and mature, with plenty of downer songs here. The songs are strong, but the music is devoid of the excellent guitar driven music she made in the 2010s. The record gets dragged down toward the middle and end, but there is still PLENTY here to discover and enjoy many times over.
Hands down, Lydia Loveless is the finest alternative singer-songwriter of our time. Now, if only people knew who she was!
