I wasn’t sure how the Red Hot Chili Peppers would sound without John Frusciante. I was sad that he left because he’s a great guitarist and I think he brought something very special to the band. When I heard he left I was disappointed and skeptical of their new album. However thankfully, they proved me wrong. Their new guitarist, Josh Klingoffer, I give credit. He’s not trying to be Frusciante, he’s bringing his own sound to the band. Outside of the guitar playing, everything else on this album is great as expected. I would put this album probably in their top five best albums but definitely in their top eight. It’s a great album definitely worth getting.

This album was tough to judge. John left, but I do think Josh was a good replacement. I only don't like his work on Maggie and Monarch. Flea's addition of piano in the last few songs was great and gave the RHCP a completely "new" sound, especially with Happiness Loves Company (almost some Beach Boys with the vocals). I was at first a little disappointed with this album and the absence of John, but I have grown to appreciate the introduction of a more ambient guitar player, African music (especially in Dance, Dance, Dance and Ethiopia), and Flea's piano parts into the RHCP.

Alright, so if I'm going to condemn The Black Keys for going three albums without changing their sounds, it would be hypocritical of me not to call out RHCP for doing the same thing for the last 20-odd years. That's not to say that there aren't some good cuts buried on this album. Police Station might be the best song they've produced in the 2000s (the piano part is awesome) and Even You Brutus is very good as well. The rest? Well, it's nothing that hasn't been done again and again. The lack of John Frusciante is admittedly not the trainwreck I thought it would be, but the abscence is obvious with the guitar part put on the backburner on most songs, and replaced with more drums, more sound ont he vocals, and even a brass instrument here and there. Overall, it's not a great job but it had every right to be worse than it turned out to be (and at least it wasn't 2 CDs like the last one).

Not bad, but fairly boring. Frusciante's absence is showing unfortunately, and it shows that his contribution was more than just in guitar work. Basically these songs are the same thing RHCP offered throughout the last decade, but stripped of all the best guitar bits and vocal harmonies.

Its not a bad album, the melodies are good and the songs enjoyable, but I dont like how it sounds a bit muted. The guitar is just near missing at times.
