Rusty Tracks, Mickey Newbury's seventh album is a mixed affair. The first half is Newbury originals and the second half is composed of traditional songs that receive the Newbury touch. While the traditionals sound as good as any reworked songs by Newbury, it is unfortunate that they take up a whole side of album. It ends up sounding like a pop standards album instead of the brilliant melding of originals and traditionals that Newbury mastered on his 'Frisco Mabel Joy album. Newbury started out as a lounge singer in Houston, and would get good feedback when he sang Oh Danny Boy, long before he penned his own songs.

The originals are mixed. While there is nothing essential here, the compositions are some of the darker material on any Newbury record. It's a unique blend of outlaw country and dark confessional folk music that make for an interesting Newbury outing.

Six songs written or co-written by Mickey Newbury.

Digitally available at Mickey Newbury's website.

Track Pick: Shenandoah
Gems: Leavin' Kentucky, Danny Boy
