I Came to Hear the Music is the first follow-up album to the trilogy of Looks Like Rain, 'Frisco Mabel Joy and Heaven Help the Child. It is his fifth album overall, and has a notable drop in quality.

Many of the songs are more like sketches than finished product. There is extra twangy sheen here too, courtesy of Nashville. Although it's fun to see Newbury let loose and get a little gritty on tracks like 1x1 Ain't 2 and Dizzy Lizzy, these tracks are far from essential Newbury tracks. Still, this record is miles above anything else Nashville was producing at the time.

All songs written by Mickey Newbury.
