Come Darkness Come Light is a surprisingly savvy holiday album, the tenth studio album by Mary Chapin Carpenter. While most artists churn out half-baked versions of favorites that have been recorded thousands of times, Carpenter delivers a set of covers, carols and originals that merely dance around the concept of the holiday season. So have no fear, you can listen to this one throughout the year.
Six decent Carpenter originals are here, but the real highlights are three traditional tracks and three covers from contemporary writers. It's a hushed but focused affair, and frankly the best you could expect from a mid-career holiday album.
Recommended.
