Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 78.5/100, a mean average of 78.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 79.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.2.

What a dark and dusty record. I can almost smell the booze and the rust of an old western boomtown-gone-bust. Case took huge strides here from her last record Furnace Room Lullaby. Beautiful noir, with country undertones.

Neko Case was first recommended to me by a buddy from the Pacific Northwest. He didn't love this album; he was more taken with her earlier, more obviously country-influenced work. This was my first exposure to her, and I loved the gothic, reverb-heavy sound immediately. "Deep Red Bells" is the highlight; check out the paradoxical poetry in these lyrics: "It looks a lot like engine oil / And tastes like being poor and small / And popsicles in summer." Sweetness and darkness entwined: such is the spirit of Blacklisted.

Nice review by paladisiac. I couldn't have said it better myself. My first exposure to Neko Case was the first two songs on this album - Things That Scare Me and Deep Red Bells - played on a friend's mixed cd...I was hooked for good.

She softly storms in with "things that scare me". When she sings "the world is gonna pay", you believe her. With your attention, her voice carries you to the "valley of the shadow" where deep red bells "ring this tragic gun". I hear emmylou in her voice. The album sounds romantic and almost lustful, but the lyrics are more disturbed. A lady pilot claims "Stars can't fight city lights / They've turned their backs on us " and "All the lonely houses stand like monuments To thieves " and "If I meet you in the night / You're free to covet all you like " in "tightly". (Advice: take her up on it!) Later she seduces "When you've lived it up till it's got you down...Look for me, I'll be around (Advice: take her up on it!) "pretty girls" and "runnin' out of fools" are the highlights. Lovers abound for "pretty girls" with "curves so comely and sinister". Her cover of "runnin' out of fools" is heart-tugging and somewhat sad at the ending refrain. (in a good way)
