Ryan Adams has been busy. He has released new music annually since 2020 and in 2022 he released two new studio albums -- double albums.
The sound of Romeo and Juliet does not depart much from the style Adams has settled in over the last decade. Is has the heart of The Replacements, the soul of Springsteen and the maudlin jangle of The Smiths.
The impression from Romeo and Juliet, released barely a month after the double album Chris, is that it was rushed. Track 1-5 are as good as anything Ryan Adams has ever done, but the remaining tracks are muddled and unfinished drafts of songs.
Ryan Adams remains a genius, and despite his current political circumstances, let us hope that he continues to output quality material, but at a restrained pace.
