A John Peel favourite from the mid 80s, the Men They Couldn't Hang were great live and produced songs about social history in a style which can probably be described as 'folk-punk'. Not dissimilar to the Pogues in terms of sound sometimes, they were set apart by their concerns for the 'ordinary working man' through the ages. This album contains some of their best tracks, including 'Shirt of Blue' (about the Miners' Strike) and 'The Ghosts of Cable Street' (about the rise of Fascism in England under Oswald Mosely in the 1930s).
