I don't know if two albums were really necessary for this release, but it's still a good debut for James Murphy's popular project. I love his faux Beatles tune on track five, Daft Punk... is a classic hit, and Tribulations is an outstanding dance smash. It's just too much for me by the end. It's like in the kids book/movie Matilda where that fat kid has to eat that giant cake.
The first LCD album is a tremendous explosion, and what shines through the most is how much James Murphy fucking loves music. (Edited)
Good album... with some great songs.
I wouldn't call it a dance record, it has some dance elements but this is not a dance record. Critics name this a "Dance music' 'cause the rhythm its at the front and the repeated tempo and pulse, but I think is a lazy way to define gender.
I hear post punk, electronica, noise, experimental, synth pop.
Echoing the thought that this is James' most forgettable effort, but it had a massive impact. Losing My Edge in conjuncture with "Echoes" basically brought dance-punk back from the dead and that's no small feat; it takes a record of certain quality to bring a whole genre back and this can certainly stand up to that.
The singles are good, good, good, but the rest of it is so-so-so.
