Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 8% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.1/100, a mean average of 76.7/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.7/100. The standard deviation for this album is 9.3.

After Trace, they just repeated the formula, and not even with the same quality. You can skip this album.

When Uncle Tupelo broke up, Jeff Tweedy went on to head the band Wilco, while Jay Farrar started his own band named Son Volt. Son Volt's debut "Trace" is a major triumph for Farrar, something that defines a career and is hard to replicate.

Here, Jay Farrar and Son Volt try to repeat the success of their debut, and while the results are mostly pleasing, it is nothing more than "Trace, part 2."

Unlike Wilco, Son Volt became defined by their debut and they continue to make music in that vein. Though the music is often good, someone who is not enthralled by Trace would likely not enjoy the rest of Son Volt's catalog.

Still, Straightaways delivers. You've got the upbeat guitar songs like "Picking up the Signal, tender shuffles like "Back to Your World," and melancholy folk like "Last Minute Shakedown"

Track Pick: "Back Into Your World"
