Great bass, but the second half of the album lets it down - not a fan of the final track, Tel Aviv. Not as consistent as Rio for me. Girls on Film and To The Shore are my favourite tracks.
The Capitol reissue in 1983 included the single "Is There Something I Should Know" which was a huge hit in the U.S. and the most popular (and my favorite) song on the album.

Awesome debut Girls on Film, Planet Earth, Careless Memories are well known. Lesser known gem for me is Friends of Mine. This helped define the New Romantic sound.
Great new romantic album with some hidden gems like 'Night Boat' with its Thomas Dolbyesque very electric build up. 'Girls on Film', 'Careless Memories'and 'Planet Earth' are the standouts. There is more 'rock' than new romantic here really. Difficult to compare to 'Rio' as it is quite a different approach with a harder edge so I like both in equal measure for different reasons.

The songs are incredible.....
However the focus on the "new romantic" sound lets it down
you can hear what the songs/album could have sounded like had it been produced differently on the live album Arena - strong and powerful rock rather than robotic/electronica
This would have been a classic 80's album like Rio had the production differed
Precursor to Rio, and not as good. The highlights are the first two tracks, obvious singles. A decent enough debut but the progression from this to Rio was significant.
Take the hits away and there aint much left to shout about best track here 'Planet Earth'

i have never understood what it is to be so great about duran duran. ok, in 1981 they were stylish and maybe sexy - but their songs (except exceptions) appear simple and fleeting to me.

My rating reflects the 1983 reissue including "is there something i should know?" (as track #5, pushing "to the shore" to the bottom). This was a cool debut from the mtv-stylish 80s hit machine. "Other" top tracks include "girls on film" and "planet earth".
