Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 62.4/100, a mean average of 60.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 60.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 21.0.

Bright Lights is the stand out on this one. Rating (79.16)
Forgettable and routine pop/soft rock. Unwell, one of the better tracks, was plucked out of the mediocrity to be the primary single. The rest is even less impressive.
It's deflating for a band when they attempt to broaden their sound and creativity, succeed at it, and then are shunned by a mass audience for being too different.
After Mad Season puzzled fans with it's production and horns, Matchbox Twenty fearfully revert back to mainstream pop/rock waters with a bunch of radio ready songs.
Unfortunately, these set of songs lack hooks and melody to make them successful singles. Thomas starts the album off trying to siphon the success of his Latin infused crossover "Smooth" with Santana to moderate success.
The singles here are weak. "Unwell" is too sweet and syrupy for a band that wanted to "Push" you around just a few years back.
Downfall is the only song here that is original and interesting. The album starts off well enough but not spectacularly. It then drifts off into blah territory on its back side minus Downfall.
This is Matchbox Twenty's weakest album. They would hit a hiatus after this when Rob Thomas decides to go solo and take on full blown pop. Yuck
Basically just Unwell with a lot of other fluff. Not a huge fan of this one. Disease is nice live, though, I suppose ...
Excellent album, very underrated.
With the release of their new cd I broke out this one and found that I had forgotten how much I enjoy it.
